about

🔼 Enter Dance Jail is the first chapter in the saga of Virgil Equinox, disgraced International Super Dance Champion, after he is confined to the sinister DANCE JAIL: a high tech correctional facility for criminals deemed too good at dancing to house anywhere else. Where dancing is a weapon... and your only defense.

In the face of adversity, Virgil’s noble spirit shines through. Perhaps the will to dance never left him! Perhaps Virgil’s true prison was in his heart! If you believe in yourself, no cage can hold you!

🔼 Jean-Patrick Nova’s Dance Jail is a long-gestating passion project for the director, first appearing as a comedy trailer in 2008, later expanded into a 22 minute tv pilot in 2015, and finally seeing limited release in 2022. Imagine The Running Man crossed with West Side Story, but cast exclusively with non-dancers.

🔼 The two key reference points for the score are the theme song from Mortal Kombat and the theme song from Airwolf, but its influences also include disco, italo, electro, industrial, IDM, horror film scores, video game boss music, and more.

While there are a few legitimate musical motifs that run through the album, its beating heart is “grunting”, “panting”, and “animal noises”. That or maybe “orchestra hits”. Here’s a fun game you can play as you listen through the album: count the number of orchestra hits as you go. If you count more than 100, you win!

🔼 Most of the music collected here was originally composed circa 2015, but has been newly remixed, remastered, and expanded. The tracks are presented in more or less the order they appear in the short, so you can pretend you’re watching the movie as you listen; but longer than the movie, and with no dialog.

All songs written and produced by Ian McKinney 2008-2022.
